Recall Appeal on the Promotion and Re-introduction of Traditional Sports and Games into the Daily Lives of European Citizens

This appeal,
in accordance with the European Physical Activity Guidelines 2008, UNESCO’s
International Charter of Physical Education and Sport 1978, UNESCO’s Berlin
Declaration 2013, UN’s Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities
2006 and Designed to Move Physical Activity Action Agenda, confirms and
reinforces the importance of Traditional Sports and Games as a vehicle for
European unity, integration, cultural diversity, peace and physical activity.

Many European
Traditional Sports and Games have disappeared or are under threat. In order to promote
European integration and contribute to cultural diversity, as well as to
guarantee the participation of all in sports, physical activity and traditional
games, regardless of gender, religion, ability or social background, we resolve
to promote Traditional Sports and Games as a decisive component of world sports
in itself and further develop the complementarity between Traditional Sports
and Games and modern sports.

This appeal
acknowledges the need for action at the European, national, regional and local
levels required to develop plans, strategies and investments to align
Traditional Sports and Games to the future and reintroduce them into the daily
lives of European citizens. It is agreed that this plan should include:

- Support networks that cooperate with local, regional,
national, European and international groups,

- Work with academic partners and institutions to
document and evaluate the role of Traditional Sports and Games,

- Work toward capacity building and dissemination of
programs and events at the local, regional, national and European levels,

- Work to ensure the inclusion of people of all
abilities and universal access to Traditional Sports and Games.

The supporters
of the appeal call the European Commission, European Parliament and European
Council to continue the effort in supporting the promotion and preservation of
Traditional Sports and Games initiated within the 2013 Preparatory Actions
“European Partnerships on Sports”, under the theme “promoting traditional
European sports and games.”

The supporters
of the appeal draw attention on the relevance of integrating this theme in the
Sport Chapter of the Erasmus+ programme 2014-2020.

They proclaim
their commitment to form a task force and network to further develop the
actions started during project “Recall: Games of the Past – Sports for Today”,
co-funded by the European Commission, and consult the European Union about
Traditional Sports and Games. Among other actions, they will:

- Encourage the celebration of Europe’s rich cultural
diversity through Traditional Sports and Games,

- Promote Traditional Sports and Games as an important
mechanism for European identity and unity,

- Ensure the inclusion of Traditional Sports and Games into
the European Week of Sport,

- Transmit traditions in sport to new generations,
focusing on creating early positive experiences among children,

- Integrate physical activity into the everyday lives
through Traditional Sports and Games,

- Develop mechanisms and strategies to guarantee the
universal access to Traditional Sports and Games for people with disabilities,

- Coordinate European partnerships to restore, enhance
and celebrate Traditional Sports and Games at local, regional, national and
European levels, liaising with cultural, educational, health, environmental and
social institutions,

- Further Develop the complementarity between
Traditional Sports and Games and modern sports,

- Seek government and institutional endorsement and
investment in the promotion of Traditional Sports and Games,

- Sponsor, whenever possible, events and programs that showcase
the world of Traditional Sports and Games,

- Aim to preserve Traditional Sports and Games for the
promotion of health.

It is
understood that project “Recall: Games of the Past – Sports for Today”
exemplifies the underlying strategy and concept of this appeal, as well as puts
in place a foundation stone for a European coordinated approach towards the promotion
and re-introduction of Traditional Sports and Games into the daily lives of
European citizens.
